221,000 YEARS AGO.
An underwater volcano, thousands of leagues under the deep blue water of the Pacific Ocean. It lay dormant for hundreds of years, until this day. The heat around it's peak is so hot, that any fish to swim into it by accident is incinerated, it's ashes falling through the water like a small puff of smoke. In minutes, a blast of hot lave rockets through the water, cooling almost instantly, forming a mound the size of a house around the volcano. But it keeps rising slowly, as the lava billowing out under it fall down, covering the side of the volcano.
Slowly, year after year the mound of volcanic rock rises through the water, gaining in size. 100,000 years after the first eruption, the tip of it breaks the surface of the ocean, water spilling away in all directions as the first bit of soil that would eventually become the island known as Lacrimosa, met the air for the first time.
101,000 YEARS AGO.
After over 100,00 years, the volcanic rock is no longer what it once was. Vegetation now grows, tree's and grass. Living off the rich protein and vitamins that the rock provides. The years have aged it, and turned it into something more recognizable. An island. But this time it's more than just a peak, it's immense. Large in full than the state of Texas. Terrain ranging from flat valleys, to treacherous mountain peaks. Yet nothing but the occasional bird lives here, and the island is silent.
100 miles south, a large cargo ship from southeast Asia travels to-wards the new world, sailing in uncharted waters, the ship collides with a coral reef that they failed to see in the dark waters, and the ship begins to sink. Inside the ship, 83 Horse are being taken with the soldiers, and when immersed into the water, the current swept them away from the wreck of the ship.
Days later, exhausted and only half of them still alive, the horses are swept onto the shore of our little island. The first living thing to set foot there. And the only creature that ever would.
The 41 horses that survived the crash are in turmoil, they are alive and healthy yes. But on the island, they have no rank structure and live like wild beasts, hunting each other, and doing more damage to their own race than good. But them something happens, from the other side of the island, seven other horses, more survivors from the crash emerge. They, unlike the 41 have all lived together, in something the formerly domestic horses had never experienced. A herd. A strict ranking, and rules given by one ruler had governed them, made them more sophisticated than the other horses. And they showed the other horses a new way to live, though many we're unwilling to follow this new 'kings' leadership, and left to another part of the island to continue their ravaging and hate filled lives.
And so began the Light and Dark alliance, with a shaky start the two alliance we're always at each others throats, constantly fighting for the right to eat, breed, and for lands. And many died because of their unwillingness to make peace with each other.
81 YEARS AGO. It's been 19 years since the first two alliances have formed, and while they have nearly doubled in size, the violence continues. But unease is sweeping through the two herds, and another group of horses begin to break off from the two original herds. They are horses who are just beginning to realize that there is no need for this violence, and who just want the peace that they envision. They are the Neutrals, the horses who want the island to live in peace, under one king one herd. Themselves. They try to dominate the other herds by sheer size, but in the end all three herds still remain. As solidly divided by their beliefs as the island they lived on was divided from the main land.
The three main herds have broken off from each other, each living on a different part of the island, living different lives. A sort of uneasy peace has emerged from the alliances, a truce that is to last for ten years before any changes are to be made. A chance for the alliances to rebuild after the war that lasted for almost three hundred years. And still another alliance has come up, the Loners. They choose (unlike the neutrals) to have no affiliation with any of the alliances, they distance themselves completely and will not take part in any wars, but prefer to have their own rules, and live their own lives in peace with themselves. With this, the herds have developed a sort of calm, but who knows how long it will be that this will last.
Things have changed over the hundreds of years that have passed since the descendants of the current horses first walked across the island. Colors have developed, strengths and weaknesses associated with each specific alliance. The herds are more sophisticated, each alliance having several herds rather than just the single herd. And still, the anger remains. The current king of the Neutrals is forever wishing to merge all alliances into one, with he as the king of them all. Saying that things would be better if everyone obeyed the same rules. But no one will listen, no king would give up his alliance to another stallion just because of some ideas that might work.
The Darks seem unusually silent, and have no had any raids on the other alliances, and this leaves the Lights and Neutrals uneasy, what are they planning? Why are they so silent and peacefully all of a sudden?
The Lights continue in their ways, though they seem to be peace lovers their is a rumor spreading that their king is creating an army of trained assassins to wipe out the dark alliance completely. If this is true, what does this spell for the dark alliance? Could the Light King really accomplish this?
The Loners have distanced themselves even further, so much as to refuse to come to the annual meeting between the other three kings. They will have no part of the vendettas between the other herds, but their former king is on the brink of death and they say his son is not what the Loners need in a king, that he his not the kind of horse who will keep the Loners where they want to be.
Not only these things, but a startling discovery has been made. A large group of horses has been discovered on a previously unexplored part of the island. It would seem that over the years, horses and foals who disappeared we're take here, to the Rebels. A previously unknown Alliance that had been hiding from the others, biding it's time. But they have come out and made themselves know now, and they pose a threat the other herds could never imaging. Whats worse, their ruler is a Queen, a beautiful creature who they all seem devoted to. But why? She tells no one of her plans, and can be cruel and harsh. Yet her orders are obeyed without question, and her people seem to love her. What kind of dark magic is going on that she has enslaved the former Darks, Lights, Neutrals and Loners to her will? No one knows, but many are intent on finding out.
Not only this, but though the Rebel queen and her alliance seem harmless, the Neutrals have stumbled upon some horrible evidence. A betrayal, one of the Rebels has escaped from their alliance, and joined the Neutrals. He has spilled all he knows. The truth about The Rebels devotion remains a secret, but one even worse has been uncovered. The Rebels are preparing for war. And their first target, is to destroy the Light alliance and take it's people to continue their domination of the island.
But the trouble thickens, the Light King has a problem. He knows the Rebel Queen, for she is his Sister. Long lost to him, proclaimed to be dead shortly after their birth. But she seems not to notice, or remember him and he doesn't know what to do. The Neutral king keeps trying to warn him, but the Light King doesn't want to hurt his sister, and doesn't believe she would hurt him. But in all this mayhem, the son of the Dark King falls in love with the Rebel Queen, much to the dismay of his father. Though despite the betrayal, the Dark King will not let his son leave his site, for fear that he will give the Rebel Queen the darks deepest secrets, yet he is afraid that he may have to kill his only son in favor of his young daughter, for we're his son to take over the throne any time soon, his adoration to the Rebel Queen could cause the entire Dark Alliance to collapse.
As the upcoming war approaches, sparks fly and lives collide on the island. Horses disappear, and are never found. Strange powers keep making themselves known. And all that the horses once believed in is about to be stripped away to the bone.
The tension between the alliances grew to an escalade, the Rebels joined with the Loners, an alliance unforseen by all horses. Together, they attacked the Lights and in the process, Gemma and Xanxus are forced to battle. During the battle, another horse appears. Gemma and Xanxus's mother. It turns out that their mother was the source of Gemma's power all along, she had the gift to strenghten and loosen the ties of all emotions and relationships to any horse. In fury at his mother's betrayal, Xanxus tries to kill her, but cannot. Gemma cuts his throat before he can reach their mother. The battle over the lights won, Gemma and her alliance take over the lights and attack the Neutrals. But someone else witnessed the battle between Gemma and Xanxus, and now knew the terrible secret of their mother's power. A young filly. She ran to the darks, and in turn for protection gave them the secret they would need to save their alliance.
But when Gemma and the Rebels defeated the Neutrals, and moved on to the Darks. But the Dark prince had cheated his father, and had secret gained the Dark alliances trust. And they refused to right Gemma. In his fury, the Dark King attacked at the nearest horse. Gemma's mother. Gemma and her horses, had in turn attacked the dark alliance, and were beating them. Though the Dark Prince begged her to stop the killing. Seconds after the battle started, it stoped. Gemma's mother was dead and the other horses no longer felt that they belonged with Gemma any longer. In her fury, Gemma attacked the Dark Prince, and faced with no other choice the dark king killed them both.
The alliances, half destroyed and appalled at the horrible turn of events, left to try and re-form. But now, there were only three alliances. The Rebels were never again to be. And the Loners merged with the other three alliances. The Lights, The Neutrals, and The Darks. The three new kings of the alliances swore a pact that never again would a new alliance be formed, and if they were they would not be permitted to continue. They also promised that each alliance would have ten years of immunity, there would be no wars. No battles. And each would be given a chance to re-form and grow strong again. And so they parted, each longing to forget the chain of events that had led to so many deaths.
NOW. The ten years of immunity are over. What will the alliances do? They seem at ease with each other, but the kings who formed the pact are old. And there are many who seek to take over.
The three alliances have changed as well. They now call themselves by different names. The Lights have become the Whites. The Loners have become the Grays, and the Dark changed to the Blacks. The way of the horses has also changed, they have become almost humanlike in their heirchy. Taking ranks and customs known to us as medieval kingdoms. What has become of the once wild and free horses? Instead the inslave themselves in their attempt to be free.
